By Iyanla Vanzant: Peace from Broken Pieces: How to Get Through What You're Going Through Review by Emily Barber "baremp" (Quebec,Canada)
The author was quite candid at the beginning of this book, unfortunately, the last couple of chapters jumped around too much.
I was a little disappointed as I feel she borrowed too much from those who were her mentors.

I also saw Ms. Vanzant during Oprah's farewell season. I didn't go out and get the book because like many, I thought Ms. Vanzant's ego was running rampant when she questioned why her picture wasn't on the wall. However, after I got my ego in check, I remembered that she's a human being.
After reading the book, I believe Ms. Vanzant showed readers her humanness -- nobody's perfect. I felt she was very honest and open about what she went through as child, teenager, young woman, wife and mother. She, unlike most mothers, had the guts to admit her missteps as a mother. She was also a single parent. I'm not making excuses for her, but parenting can be tough enough when there are two parents involved. When you're a single parent, everything is on your shoulders. Sometimes, you rely on your kids or at least the 'one child' who seems to be more mature than the others. This brings me to the point about the reviews that questioned 'why' her two other children didn't receive much attention in the book. It was obvious to me that she and her daughter Gemmia were extremely close for many reasons, one of which is Gemmia was an integral part of Inner Visions. I can understand why she hi-lighted their relationship. Plus, through Gemmia's journals, Ms. Vanzant recognized her family's pathology spilled over into Gemmia's life.
What I really liked about the book was how Ms. Vanzant included how Gemmia felt about her. Most daughters wouldn't dream of telling their mothers what they really think of them. I related to Gemmia on many levels and was moved how Ms. Vanzant wrote about her daughter's battle with cancer; it brought me to tears. I would have liked to have met Gemmia and probably would have benefited from being coached by her. It's too bad she didn't write a book because younger generations could benefit from life coaching from those who are closer in age versus someone who may be old enough to be our mother. Perhaps, I'll begin my own life coaching practice.
BTW: I too would have appreciated more tips because as most reviews pointed out, the book's subtitle is "How to Get Through What You're Going Through." Personally, I believe that's an oversight by the editor who was responsible for editing the book and making the sure the title matches the content. I'm an aspiring author and have been told over and over again that the title of my books better match the content.
All in all, I believe this book will be helpful to those who are willing to look deeper into their lives and family pathology to find where the dysfunction began and how it continues today. Perhaps, you have to be willing to ask tough questions about your life and family. If you're not ready to do so, this book may not be for you and that's alright.
